Shaw Game Itinerary

Plans have changed. We will be playing the halftime show.

Playing Tests

Zeroes have been filled in the grade book for those who did not turn in their playing test by Saturday. In an effort to get this process rolling better, I am offering the assignment up again for this Saturday, October 28th. Students in 2nd and 3rd period will only be able to make a maximum of 80 points on this makeup assignment. (Fourth period was not properly notified of the assignment.) Students who turned it in on time on October 21st will be given an automatic 100.

If you are unable to take your instrument home to complete your playing test, you will have to sign up for a time to complete it in the Band Room. You may not skip another class to complete it. Your options are during your lunch period, or after school. (This week, you can have until 4:15 to be done and out. After this week, you will have until 4:00.)

Here is the form to sign up for a makeup time. You will have to be logged into Google with your @docostudents.org email address.

Itinerary -- 08-18-2017 Westover at Pelham

Parents,

I apologize and thank you for your patience in waiting for this itinerary. We are very excited for the arrival of our first performance. It has been a wonderful problem to deal with the details (jackets, bibbers, shoes, shirts, hats, plumes, gloves, guard uniforms, warmups, tote bags, tuba necks & bits, sticks, mallets, valves, guides, springs, grease, oil, music, sharps, flats, key signatures, rhythms, lugs, heads, hoops, harnesses, dues, water, gatorade, meals, instructors, ET CETERA) of putting together a band that represents 50% GROWTH OVER LAST YEAR!!

Thank you again, and here you go. We will have copies of this itinerary, and a bus list posted tomorrow.

Please remember WHITE BIBBERS.

Band Camp Letter

Hello Marching Patriots,

I hope you have had a wonderful summer. As you know, the time for Band Camp is here. If you have not done so already, please visit www.westoverband.org and follow the instructions to get signed up for text message notifications through Remind. There is also a calendar section for all Band Camp times and game nights. We will adhere to the following schedule for Band Camp:

  • July 3-7
    • NO REHEARSALS ON JULY 4TH.
    • Leadership & Rookies (non-guard, non-perc) 8am-12pm
    • Percussion & Color Guard 1pm-5pm
  • July 10-14 Full Band, 8am-12pm and 1pm-5pm
  • July 17-21 Full Band, 8am-12pm and 1pm-5pm
  • July 24-28 Full Band, 8am-12pm only

Please come prepared to WORK. Always have your instrument or other equipment necessary to play. It would also be very wise to have a hat (the wider the better), sunglasses, a towel, bug spray, sunscreen, and a water bottle. Rookies...you will get sweaty and your feet will get dirty, so don't dress cute.

In order to participate in marching band this year, all fees must be current. On May 11, 2017, the Band Boosters collected $25.00 of the band dues which total $125.00. Vets should have paid all of the $125 by the time camp starts. Rookies and Color Guard should have paid for the parts of their uniform that need to be ordered by the time camp starts (July 3rd), and have the remainder paid by the time school starts (August 1st). There is more detail at http://www.westoverband.org/ under "Band Fees and Schedule". The money will be collected after practice or can be mailed to Westover Band Boosters, P.O. 70201, Albany, GA 31708.

TIMELY PAYMENT IS ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT THIS YEAR. I HAVE MADE CONTACT WITH 114 STUDENTS SO FAR THIS YEAR WITH INTEREST IN MARCHING BAND. THAT IS WELL ABOVE THE 65 OR SO WE HAVE HAD THE LAST TWO YEARS. WE WILL DEFINITELY HAVE TO ORDER SOME NEW JACKETS THIS YEAR, AS WELL AS BLUE BIBBERS BEFORE OUR FIRST GAME ON AUGUST 25TH, WHICH IS WESTOVER'S ALUMNI WEEK. WE ALSO NEED TO BE PREPARED TO PAY FOR OUR BAND CAMP INSTRUCTORS WHEN THEY ARE HERE.

If you have any questions, the best way to reach me is at jason.high@docoschools.org or via Remind.

You may download this letter below.

Band Fees and Schedule

Parents, thank you for bearing with us regarding fees. In the past, we have set deadlines across the summer to help you space the payments out and not get swamped suddenly at the beginning of Band Camp, or the start of the school year. However, this does not necessarily prepare us for when money needs to be spent by Band Boosters.

This year, this is especially important, as we stand to gain many new members. In fact, WE MAY NOT EVEN HAVE ENOUGH UNIFORM JACKETS, and this will require extra diligence on our timing.

We MUST order uniform parts and be prepared to pay instructors by the beginning of Band Camp, and we must be prepared to buy our supplies for games when school starts. Please refer to the following charts to meet payment expectations, and please contact me through remind, or at jason.high@docoschools.org with any questions.

Deadline
TOTAL Commitment Night (05/11) June 1st July 3rd August 1st
Band Vets $125 paid $25 of $125 paid $75 of $125 paid $125 of $125 done

Pre-Festival and LGPE again

The more of you that can take your instruments home with you tomorrow (today if you're in academic decathlon), the better. I can't possibly fit more than about two tubas and the percussion stuff we need with out filling my car up. I will take all the folders that are in the slots.

Our two MOST IMPORTANT performances of the year are coming up:

  • Pre-Festival is Sunday, January 26th, at Dougherty High School. Arrive dressed in all-black DRESS CLOTHES by 5pm.

Concert Band Rehearsals / All-County Auditions

As stated in your Band Handbook, ALL BAND CLASSES (except for Beginning Band) are required to participate in Concert Band performances (and therefore rehearsals), and are required to try out for All-county.

  • Concert Band rehearsals begin next week on Tuesday, November 8, and will be every Tuesday after school from 3:45-5:45. Once again, these rehearsals are REQUIRED for all students in a non-beginning band class. People not in attendance, and who have not been excused AHEAD OF TIME will receive zeros for participation grades. People who leave early or come late without a valid and APPROVED excuse will be graded accordingly.
  • All-County Auditions are at 4:30 on Tuesday, November 15th, at Robert Cross Middle School. This date has been talked about in class for more than three months, and no students have raised transportation concerns in that time. This audition will count as a "summative assessment" grade, which totals 35% of the report card grade. This audition will be averaged with a written test to reach that 35% total.

Competition Needs

Parents,

(First of all, thank you to those that responded to the other day’s e-mail. Almost all of those attendance issues were immediately cleared up. I used this to tell the kids that you have power over your own life to make things happen….to not just give up at the first wave that hits you in the face. I thank you for working with me on this. If there are any issues left to resolve, please contact me and we’ll do whatever we need to do. I even offered to go cut somebody’s grass Friday evening if it will get them here Saturday.)

I apologize for the late request, but this show is REALLY coming together, and the ideas are flowing. I think I have some characters ready to go, and Miss Vasquez is working on our backdrops. I bought *some* costume elements last night (pictured). If y’all can help in any way…it looks like I still need:

Dorothy – outfit, maybe overalls and flannel/plaid. The skirt won’t work well on the field.
Tinman – body part of costume. I have silver hat and mask. Was thinking maybe some old shin guards I could spray paint silver, gray sweatsuit.
Scarecrow – I bought a mask, but I don’t like it. Looks like something out of a horror movie. I think we could cut the bill off of a hat, and glue some straw to it to make a wig. That, with the right outfit ought to be enough.
Lion – I have NOTHING for this except our character actor has a pretty well developed afro that will serve as the mane, kinda sorta. We need a costume…tail….?
Wizard – covered

Please and thank you. Any ideas welcome. I’ve constructed props up to the point that I’m waiting on the artwork to be finished. I have our green smoke grenades. I bought 150 balloons to be released at the end of “home”. We need to rent a propane tank for that day to fill them up.

Thanks,
